New Years Eve/ last day!

On New Year's Eve, the Brazilians have a designated area each year to watch fireworks! We decided to take a stroll. The street was packed with different age groups and other tourists having fun on their last day of 2012. We stumbled upon a cart that was selling acaraje. It is a popular street food . it contains black eyed peas seasoned with ground dried shrimp and onions, They're shaped into balls and deep fried in palm oil. We had to stand around the cart until we finished eating because on of the traditions in Brazil is that they don't eat on the go. We greatly enjoyed our trip in Brazil but we look forward to being reunited with our family in America.

Christmas Day in Brazil

It's Christmas day! Today we are having lunch at a friends house. We went to church early this morning and came home ready to eat lunch. The kids had alot of presents from Papai Noel, their version of Santa Claus. For lunch, we are having Feyada. It is the Brazilian national dish and it is also eaten in America, but it is known as a cuisine. It is a stew made with black turtle beans and various cuts of pork and beef, often served with rice and collard greens or deep fried cassava or banana. It was cooked using the three main cooking methods used in Brazil - boiling, puree, and marinated.

For dinner, we had cozido at 7:30pm. It is a stew with potatoes, carrots, and vegetables. we ate it with a side of brazilian bread. It was made using temprano baiano - the most popular spice in Brazil. Temprano baiano come in many different forms. It can be mild or spicy. Paracress is a common herb in Brazil. First Meals

December 21, 2011
This morning, we ate breakfast at the lounge in our hotel. We ate at about 8:00am. We had coffee, sunny side up eggs, and toast. Since the meal was quite American, we decided to try something different for lunch. We ate Sao Paulo restaurant in Bahia. We had Vatapa. It is a spicy, delicious mixture of bread, shrimp, red peppers, ginger, peanuts, coconut milk, palm oil, and onions served over rice. An interesting fact about this dish is that even though people call it a stew/soup, it really has a creamy puree texture. We ate lunch at 1:30pm.

Our first day in Brazil

December 20th 2012
We just landed in Brazil, a country in South America, about two hours ago. We are currently staying at Hotel Fazenda da Lagoa in the city of Bahia. It is really out here (in the high 80s) and the air is crisp. Everywhere is beautiful and we can not wait to explore Brazil. This is a picture of the hotel we are staying in.
